AP collaborated with the UCCA Group’s UCCA Lab to undertake the spatial design and production of UCCA Lab’s inaugural art project, “Detachment: Audio-Visual Interactive Experience Space.” The dynamic curation of the exhibition is jointly created by new media artist: Miao Jing and the band: Mandarin. The art project focuses on the band members’ personal insights into “detachment,” and their visual expression of the concept. Detaching from the urban revelry, it explores the mysticism found in the gap between real and virtual life.
The exhibition, themed “Urban Remains,” focuses on how to rhythmically escalate the exhibition experience towards a climax. The entire exhibition hall is a dark space, divided into three areas: the foyer, a tunnel, and the main exhibition area. Visitors are led from stillness to motion through a labyrinth-like tunnel into the main hall, ending in a large space dedicated to displaying the most important art installation of the exhibition. Therefore, the tunnel becomes the emotional focal point of the space design.
We boldly imagined this place as urban remains, witnessing a performance involving new human and new species. Visitors arrive and enter the foyer where they can hear the performance but cannot tell where it is. We imagine the tunnel as a spaceship landing on the remains. The scattered artworks are hints of the future, peering through the spaceship’s portholes at the world of remains. The pulsing timeline takes us from the past to the present and into the future… Finally, we arrive at the main exhibition area where the band Mandarin’s performance is underway, with music, lights, new humans, all objects and lives reveling…
Therefore, with design, we have responded to the above concepts one by one. Artist Miao Jing’s static works are loaded into the spaceship, the opened portholes are the means to explore the world of remains, and the pulsating timeline on the walls is the spatial installation designed by AP… Join us! For the urban revelry above the remains.
